Odisha University of Health Sciences starts functioning from today

BHUBANESWAR: The much-awaited Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS) was established on Sunday. It has started functioning from its temporary building at Sishu Bhawan Square here from the day of its establishment.
The health and family welfare department on Sunday issued a notification saying that the OUHS was established on March 5, 2023 (Panchayati Raj and Lokaseva Divas) with the headquarters at Bhubaneswar. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik approved this on Sunday.
The new university will provide uniform and quality medical education in undergraduate and postgraduate courses of allopathy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, laboratory technology and all other paramedical sciences in the state.
This will be an affiliating university covering more than 200 hundred medical and para medical colleges in the state. The authorities are working on evolving a common curricula and academic calendars for medical colleges under different universities, which will be part of OUHS.
Now Odisha has at least 10 government medical colleges and several Ayurvedic, homeopathy, nursing and paramedical institutions, which are under different general universities, will be affiliated to OUHS.
Within 2-3 years, four more government medical colleges will become functional at Kalahandi, Jajpur, Kandhamal and Talcher. Private institutions providing health and paramedic education will also come up. This university will manage these institutions.
Delay in commissioning of the university had raised concern of MLAs across party lines in the state assembly in July last year. The then health minister Damodar Rout had announced the establishment of an affiliating health university in 2014.
A bill to establish the university was passed more than a year ago in September 2021. Odisha University of Health Sciences Act has come into force from August 15 last year to cater to the much-needed quality in medical education in the state.
Now Datteswar Hota, former dean and principal of SCB medical college and hospital, is looking after the affairs of the university as an officer on special duty.
Sources said the government has been working out on the initial manpower need and infrastructure for starting the university. A committee has been formed to suggest an alternative site of around 25 acres for the university’s permanent campus in the city.
